The Path
This project is located in Shanghai and is a 700-square-meter detached private residence. Our design focus was mainly on the basement space. The original building's basement space was scattered and disorganized, with several independent small and large spaces interconnected. The floor plan was also typical of the Shanghai handgun-shaped layout, combined with the 6-meter ceiling height, some small spaces gave the impression of a dark well, while the large spaces resembled long cliffs. For the basement, we adopted the design concept of "disrupting, rearranging, and connecting" to transform it: In the planning of the basement, the first thing we considered was breaking it down and rearranging (space reorganization). In the design of the handgun-shaped layout, the conventional approach is to have one side for circulation and the other for functions. However, our concept breaks this conventional idea by using a bridge to connect the two spaces on the left and right, transforming the L-shaped circulation into an H-shaped one. After the space is dispersed, the advantages become apparent. With a ceiling height of 6 meters, multiple spaces can be combined and interlaced in a rational way, and the existing columns and space sizes can be combined. After the circulation is centered, the left, right, and upper and lower box spaces are combined and interlaced through the bridge, realizing the stacking and interlacing of indoor spaces. As for the owner's requirement for a grand dressing room: It is not difficult to make a large and luxurious dressing room, but the key is to remove excessive embellishments and add a sense of ceremony. Therefore, we abandoned the idea of it being a dressing room and turned to scenes in dinner parties, fashion shows, and paintings. For example, the concept of descending in a grand procession while wearing elegant clothes. Although the area is 90 square meters, we have connected the upper and lower levels and wasted some space, but it presents a different kind of dressing space.
