The 37-square-meter "Tangram House"  37
This project is situated within a 1930s-era new-style lane house constructed with brick and wood. The homeowners are a young couple with children under the age of five. The interior area of this 37-square-meter apartment, featuring a partial ceiling height of 3.6 meters, originally comprised of one bedroom, one living room, and an attic that could not be demolished or rebuilt. Primarily intended for the children's daily school use, the design drew inspiration from the tangram, a popular puzzle game among children, and utilized a dopamine-inspired color scheme to infuse the space with vitality and alleviate monotony. By adopting a flexible and modular design approach, the functional spaces were meticulously planned, ultimately evolving into a unique living arrangement with two halls and no designated bedrooms, fostering a closer parent-child bond. In terms of circulation planning, the positions of the kitchen and bathroom in the original layout were swapped, embracing an LDK (Living-Dining-Kitchen) design that maximized the precious floor space by eliminating redundant partitions. This allowed for three primary sources of natural light to converge in a single space. The entryway is designed to lead directly to a hand washing station, aligning with the homeowners' hygiene habits. The master bedroom, though located in the previously cramped attic, underwent significant improvements in spatial comfort through the creation of window openings and the introduction of a fresh air conditioning system. Adopting a free-form composition approach, the functional spaces were strategically arranged, ultimately resulting in a unique living environment with two halls and no dedicated bedrooms, fostering an even closer parent-child bond. In terms of circulation planning, the kitchen and bathroom positions were swapped from the original layout, adopting an LDK (Living-Dining-Kitchen) design that maximized the precious floor area by minimizing wasted space due to unnecessary partitions. Additionally, the three primary light sources converge in a single space. The entryway is immediately adjacent to a handwashing station, aligning with the homeowners' hygiene habits. The master bedroom was situated in the formerly cramped attic, but its usability was significantly enhanced through the introduction of window openings and a fresh air conditioning system, greatly improving the overall comfort of the space.
