Bvlgari Hotel Residence, Shanghai
Wong Kar-waii’s romantic drama “In the mood for love” were the key point of reference for this collaboration between two designer studios SlowStudio and Dramaa, which has set out this unique Shanghai residence with contrasting colour palette of Chinese rouge and ink black. The urban materiality of the living room is interrupted by combining traditional Chinese aesthetic of geometric patterns of the carpet from Taiping Fret Collection and iconic 20th century designer furniture, for instance, the Tulip Table by Eero Saarinen, coffee table by Isamu Noguchi and 637 Utrecht Armchair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. The sculptural forms of designer pieces are balanced with the softness of this curvilinear sofa in mint green velvet, in order to achieve a welcoming comfort from busy city life. Contrasting to the glamorous “movie set” living room, the master bedroom deliberately adopts a much calmer shade of olive and grey. In terms of materiality, the designers mix soft wools throw from Society Limonta with the warm texture of woven paper cord on the famous CH25 by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Son. The key to emphasising the witty character of the owner is those much recognizable cushions with artworks of famous opera singer Lina Cavalier from Fornasetti. Each room is an independent entity in terms of colours and materials, which gave the different moods according to its functions.
