"Why do we need an office?" In a working space survey conducted by an International Design Research Institute of 2020, the above question was put forward. The reason of having this question is that during Covid 19, most of works were done at home. In this case, what is the significance of having an office that bears the pressure of rent and transportation to us? The Asia Foundation (TAF) is an international non-profit organization headquartered in San Francisco, USA. During the outbreak of Covid 19 last year, almost all offices are closed and staff had to work from home, and the China office became the first team to return to the office. The suspension provides an opportunity to examine the past, and there is the power of change in the stagnation. Faced with the current situation where the lease to be expired and the space is no longer suitable for demand, TAF decided to choose a new location and discuss the possibility of a new type of office space with the designer. As a pioneer, they hope to find a feasible way to conform to the future development trend of office, and at the same time provide reference for offices in other countries. The results of the survey returned to the philosophical level--people are social animals. The core of the office is not meeting rooms and printers, but people. Here, we can not only work efficiently and enhance team cohesion, but more importantly, through face-to-face communication, we can experience a sense of community belonging and mutual inspiration in the process of cooperation. Based on the above requirements, the future office space should have four characteristics: flexibility, conducive to teamwork, promotion of physical and mental health, and strengthening of identity. The original layout of independent offices and high partition workstations obviously does not conform to this trend. Considering the staff’s high frequent demand of video conferences, we plan the space according to the combination of open office area + multiple meeting spaces + diverse working spots. The angle formed by the corridor and the entrance makes the office area unobstructed. We use this feature to set an arc-shaped brick wall here. While fully displaying the company logo, it also protects the privacy of the back office. The gray bricks gradually disperse with the arc, and the wall breathes between opening and closing. For the offices of international organizations, reflecting local culture is substantial for office character. The gray bricks here not only represent the Hutongs and courtyards of Beijing, but also point to the gardens and the Great Wall. Instead of creating a figurative scene, we use glass tiles of the same scale to echo it on the opposite side: real and virtual, gray and white, barrier and penetration, tradition and modernity. The black-and-white photos on the purple wallpaper are photos of the key projects carried out by the Asia Foundation in China. All employees sit along the window, enjoying the even north-facing natural light and the unique scenery of Chang An avenue. The translucent low screen and the spacious long table support and encourage cooperation and communication. In the center of the open office, stands a hut covered with natural moss, like a small cavern hidden in the woods under fallen leaves. Tree House is its nickname. Tree House breaks the repetitive rhythm of the long bench table, while creating visual interest to the space. The natural moss treated with fresh-keeping technology not only brings lush visual experience to the entire space, but also has the function of purifying the air and absorbing noise. This is not a meeting room in the traditional sense. The sound insulation and privacy of the glass are not as good as dry wall enclosed rooms, but people still likes to sit here for meeting. Lower the volume, adjust the sitting posture, and experience the special feeling of this red inner cavity covered by moss. In addition to workstations and meeting rooms, one can also work at the high desks along the windows. It’s a viewing platform for stretching waists and legs, overlooking the capital, and relaxing eyes, it’s also a leisure port for a cup of coffee, relaxed discussions, and exchange of ideas. When colleagues from other countries visit, it will then become their desks. The power of a plank should not be underestimated. In this office space, Coast is the only meeting room in the traditional sense. The artistically processed Golden Gate Bridge landscape not only establishes a psychological connection with TAF’s San Francisco headquarter, but the extension of the coastline also visually enhances the sense of space, making this small meeting room warm and spacious. Cave is a magical existence. Although less than 4 square meters, it has multiple functions such as meditation, video conference, changing room, nap, and maternity room. People experience the feeling of being wrapped in a small space, and the transfer to the psychological level is peace and tranquility. The organic shape revolving door creates a small sense of ceremony for opening and closing, and takes people into a green cave, a small world where one can inhabit and focus. TAF Beijing office has been in use for a period of time, and the head of China introduced their experience and new office space to other countries at their recent global conference. Other offices will also take this as a guide and implement the new concept into the office space renovation. What change brings is not loss and indifference, but joy and warmth after returning to humanity. Tree House, Coast, and Cave, these terms do not sound belonging to modern office, but while satisfying the needs of multiple functions, they also touch people's desire for warmth and beauty. The root of space is people. In such a society that prides itself on efficiency and speed, is human care more precious? This is the belief that we have always firmly held in the design practice, and it has also witnessed the brilliant blooming of The Asia Foundation after the reform.
