Haitang River Ecological Park- Haitang Xiaoyi
The Haitang River near Sanya Bay suffered pollution from rapid population growth and development. Recently, real estate developers began an ecological restoration project to rejuvenate the river's natural landscape. This visitor center supports the Haitang River revitalization plan. It is set by the waterway with a terrain shaped by sedimentation and erosion, featuring meandering and sloping contours. Instead of leveling the undulating riverbanks or raising the base for an orderly layout, the design embraces a sleek, low-profile approach. Transparent, glass-encased volumes lightly touch the riverbanks, preserving the waterscape. Below ground level, the plaza and internal paths are excavated to form sunken spaces, creating a sculptural effect nestled into the riverbanks. This harmonizes with the landscape, offering a tranquil environment free from clamor. Within the three-meter-high space, a winding ramp connects different elevations, creating a continuous, undulating floor surface in harmony with the terrain. Where significant horizontal differences require stairs, downward cuts maintain the curved surface. The varied levels stagger parts of the facade, complemented by retaining walls lower than the outdoor settling blocks. This dynamic approach, free of rigid partitions, creates natural variations in light and scale along the paths, accommodating exhibition areas needing privacy or controlled lighting. Gazing out, the space becomes transparent due to these openings, yet it encompasses the entirety of the outdoor environment, guiding individuals to humbly contemplate their relationship with nature, rather than adopting a stance of conquering the land.
