Urban Organic Apartment
As urban systems become more sophisticated and mature, people increasingly yearn for an organic and relaxed life. This project is an interior renovation of an apartment we did for a young couple in Shanghai. At the layout level, our primary goal was to create a “shell” as open as possible. Thanks to the innate conditions of the house, we connected the 17-meter-deep space in the north and south directions of the house to form a long space composed of a series of functional areas such as kitchen, dining room, living room, and terrace. At the same time, the bathroom is used as a hub to circulate the circulation throughout the house, forming a layout with both openness and accessibility. This long space running from north to south carries our exploration of organic living forms in this project. This kind of space is different from hotel rooms. It does not need to be designed in a strict form, and it is even somewhat “anti-design”. All intuitive counterpoints, integrations, and unified design languages are excluded. The spatial order is hidden under the surface. We use “invisible” hands to grasp the scale, avoiding over-design and preventing formal chaos. We adopted a fragmented styling strategy, using the white wall as the base, with various functional areas scattered everywhere and showing different shapes, while ensuring enough white space and room for flexible deployment by users. The entire living space is as chaotic and orderly as a city block. This configuration strategy not only enriches the spatial hierarchy, but also conveys a sense of relaxation.Another important formal element in the space is the exposed beams. If the extended ceiling is aligned with the area below, the scope of the low space is greatly increased. The continuity of the space is also interrupted by the steps in the ceiling. So we simply exposed the beam. Equipment and pipelines on the ceiling were also exposed. The partition wall under the beam is lowered to detach it from the ceiling. In this way, the space is visually divided into two levels: upper and lower. Each functional area below can break away from the constraints of the top form and become free and flexible. Glass bricks serve as a transition between the upper and lower levels of the space, and also provide a certain amount of indirect light for the bathroom at the rear.In the public space of the residence, the bar, entrance hall, and kitchen use the same wooden materials, and there is no deliberate unity in form. These three functional areas are self-contained and consistent in form. The shape of the cabinet weakens its own expressiveness and provides the client with flexibility in displaying his own objects. The kitchen was transformed from a glass sunroom. The original glass roof is filled with thermal insulation material and covered with a wooden ceiling. While maintaining heat insulation, the wooden ceiling also creates a warm atmosphere for the entire space. The sequence of bedroom, cloakroom, bathroom, housework area, and study room forms another moving line running from north to south in the apartment. This moving line connects all the auxiliary spaces except the public living area. The bathroom is equipped with two doors, south and north, making the entire house form a circular path.
