Ju+ Coffee
Ju+ Coffee is located in Nanjing's old city south area, surrounded by traditional houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The core of the design is to combine the historical texture of the traditional buildings with modern coffee culture, focusing on injecting a youthful atmosphere into the neighborhood. In response to the surrounding old city atmosphere, the coffee shop was designed from the ethos of a neighborhood park, removing the elitist feel of afternoon tea and returning to a more everyday environment.
The façade is made of weather-resistant steel panels and aged timber to emphasize the rusticity and accessibility of the building, and perforated mesh is used at the front to enhance light transmission and visual openness. The design makes clever use of details, such as the concave design of the left window and the enclosure of the card table, echoing the sycamore tree at the entrance, to enhance the visual focus. At the same time, the right side entrance is designed with a small flap window, which is easy to bring out customers and increase the sense of intimacy.
The layout of the interior space solves the limitations of the original building's narrow horizontal orientation. The bar, as the core area, is wrapped with old wooden boards to show the traces of history. The exposed walls and beams add a sense of time to the space. Customers are guided into the space by a wandering ramp, with customized furniture and walkways of different heights, giving the space a “in sight, out of touch” garden-like experience.
In addition, the design uses the elements of canopies, which are common in Nanjing's old streets, to connect the interior with the streets through wavy perforated aluminum panels and steel and wood support structures. Ju+ Coffee successfully blends tradition with modernity, providing customers with a unique experience of traveling through time and space.
