SHASHA COFFEE
SHASHA COFFEE is a creative cold brew coffee brand established in Beijing. Located in the serene Dongsi San Tiao Hutong of Dongcheng district, its presence communicates the idea of urban slow-living. As one of the first batch of historic cultural blocks in China, Dongsi has attracted the coffee industry with its unique charm and a history of more than 700 years, while coffee also contributes to the vitality of the old city. After research, we discovered that the neighborhood is home to a significant number of typical Chinese Siheyuan and retains a complete ‘fishbone-like’ Hutong texture. As a result, we created a moving line that combines multiple functions like the bar, booth, and private seating space in our design by fusing the fishbone Hutong pattern with the original house structure. The renovation project adopts the original color scheme of the street-facing facade - gray wall and tile. Recycled bricks and old elm boards were used, dotted with gravel, slate, and greenery, to create a natural and unified atmosphere. The bar and booth area are located across from one another, with an octagonal window acting as a pick-up point for them. In addition to bringing people closer to nature, the flower pond in the centre of the zigzagging booth and the flower stand made from a Chinese medicine cabinet offer more chances for interaction and conversation among customers. Through this Hutong renovation project, we hope to not only make interpersonal and human-nature connections, but also explore the emotional ties between urban residents and Hutong culture.
